AURIOL FLAVELL STUDENT SCHOLARSHIP FOR YOUNG MUSICIANS

Established in 2014, the Auriol Flavell Student Scholarship Fund for Young Musicians has provided a total of $45,000 in awards to twenty-nine deserving music students (four of whom have received the award twice and two – three times!). It is our sincere hope to continue to present these monetary awards far into the future for upcoming generations of Maui’s finest young musicians.

These awards are intended for students who are pursuing higher education in the field of music, who play a symphony orchestra instrument, and who plan to promote community orchestras on Maui or wherever they live in the future. Awards are presented annually at the Maui Pops Orchestra’s Spring Pops concert and have ranged from $500 – $2,000 each.

Auriol was a founding member of the Maui Pops Orchestra and continued to be an active board member until her passing in November 2018. While our community has lost one of our most ardent supporters of the performing arts – and especially of talented youth – we are delighted to have our community’s support to continue Auriol’s legacy with this annual scholarship opportunity. We hope you will consider joining other donors in honoring Auriol and encouraging the youth of Maui.

2026 applications will be available in late December 2025.

Mahalo!

2025 Auriol Flavell Student Scholarship Awards were presented this year to four winners:

  • Zachary Bush plays piano and trumpet and has performed in the percussion section of Maui Pops Orchestra for three seasons. A graduating senior at Seabury Hall where he plays in the school’s band, he has also performed with the Maui Intermediate Select Band, Maui District Honor Band and Berklee College of Music’s Brass Workshop NOLA Band. Zach is hoping to combine a degree in business and music education to develop an organization that provides affordable music tutoring on Maui.
  • RubyVal Ybarra is a graduating senior at Haleakala Waldorf High School. She began violin studies at age 7 and switched to viola after hearing Teresa Skinner (her teacher) perform the Telemann Viola Concerto with Maui Chamber Orchestra in 2016. She has been playing with Maui Pops Orchestra since her freshman year. She is interested in having a therapy practice to serve women and girls, especially those who have been abused – and incorporate music into this. She will be attending Colorado State University majoring in Psychology with a minor in music performance.
  • Aria Cuthbertson is a graduating senior at Haleakala Waldorf High School. She began studying viola in 4th grade. She has been playing with Maui Pops Orchestra since her freshman year and has developed a deep passion for performing in an orchestra. She is looking at earning a BS in Mechanical Engineering to become an aerospace engineer. She is looking into Santa Clara University and University of Southern California with April visits including a focus on exploration of the music department offerings that could coordinate with the science department schedules.
  • Sebastian Bautista is a graduating senior at Baldwin High School where he plays trombone with the pep band and concert band and has been performing for and assisting with Waihe’e Elementary School’s after-school music program. This has led him to consider majoring in music education. After two years at UHMC, he is planning to attend Western Oregon University.
